Belling Integrated Dishwasher E4 Error Aylestone Road, Leicester – Leak Found and Anti-Flood Reset

I recently attended a customer in Leicester with a Belling integrated dishwasher showing an E4 error code. The customer explained that the day before, they had noticed water leaking from the appliance, and the dishwasher had then stopped working correctly.

With many dishwashers, an E4 error can be linked to water collecting in the base of the machine, often activating the anti-flood protection system. Once this happens, the dishwasher may stop mid-cycle, refuse to run properly, or continually show an error until the underlying issue is found and the base is dried out.

Initial Inspection

As this was an integrated dishwasher, access was more involved than with a freestanding appliance. I carefully removed and stripped down the appliance enough to inspect the base and internal areas properly.

On inspection, I found water sitting in the drip tray underneath the dishwasher. This had activated the anti-flood float switch, which was causing the E4 fault.

Clearing the Water and Resetting the Anti-Flood System

I removed the water from the drip tray, dried the base area thoroughly and reset the anti-flood switch. It is important not to simply reset the machine and walk away, because if the original cause of the leak is still present, the fault will return.

Once the base was dry, I carried out electrical checks on the key components to make sure there were no obvious faults with the dishwasher’s internal parts. Everything tested as expected.

Finding the Cause of the Leak

After further inspection, the cause of the leak turned out to be surprisingly simple: a soggy chip was stuck in the dishwasher door seal.

This was stopping the door from sealing correctly during the wash cycle, allowing water to escape. That leaked water then made its way into the base of the dishwasher, filled the drip tray and triggered the anti-flood protection.

It is a good reminder that dishwasher leaks are not always caused by a failed pump, split hose or expensive component. Sometimes a small piece of food debris in the wrong place can be enough to cause a leak and trigger an error code.

Testing After the Repair

Once the food debris was removed, the door seal was cleaned and the anti-flood system was reset, I tested the dishwasher multiple times.

The appliance filled, washed, drained and ran correctly with no further leaks and no return of the E4 error.
